William Edward Newsome Jr. affectionately known as “Bird” was born on July 28, 1956 to the late William Edward Newsome Sr. and Hilda E. Newsome entered into eternal rest on Monday, September 20, 2021 at Sentara Leigh Hospital.
William was one of five children. He was born and raised in Norfolk, VA. He attended Norfolk Public schools. After high school, he went on to work with Metro Machine for several years. He also worked for various trucking companies and later became a CDL independent owner operator with his last employment being with WRS trucking company. Bird was a truck driver for over 20 years.
Bird accepted Christ at an early age, and later joined Welcome Temple Community Church under the leadership of Pastor Gregory Chapman Sr.
Bird loved all of his children and his family. He was a diehard Redskins fan and he was a fun-going and loving person with a beautiful smile who was always willing and able to help anyone in need, and he lived his life to the fullest. Bird was a member of Booker T. Washington High School Marching Band, and was a lifetime member of the QD Unlimited Club where he served for years as the vice president.
Bird loved fishing, playing softball, and coaching youth basketball for the city of Virginia Beach. He won seven championships.
In the later part of 1996, Bird met his fiancé and love of his life Joann W. Cox whom he was deeply in love with until death separated them 25 years later.
He is preceded in death by his parents William E. Newsome Sr., and Hilda E Newsome, his 2nd wife Doris D. Newsome, his special cousin James Eley (Little Steven) and his lifelong friend Michael Scoby.
He leaves to cherish his fiancé Joann W. Cox, 5 children Tremayne D Williams (Tawana), Sharika Jones (Mario), Kennesha E Cox, Tiara D Williams (Marcus Sr.), and Dominique D. Cox (Melissa); 10 grandchildren Jaquan, Zion, Ivy, Shanequa, Larreka, Jahquine, Jahzya, Samiya, Nadia, and Marcus Jr; 5 great grandchildren Malachi, Peyton, Ava, Tahjai and Dessiah; 1 sister Hazel Newsome 3 Brothers Allen Harrell, James Harrell (Katherine), and Irving Newsome (Jessica); 5 sisters in law Robin Wardrick, Suzann White, Deborah Walker-Belle, Annette Parker-Williams, and Beverly Brown; 3 brothers in law Crenel Ziegler, Joseph White Jr. and Angelo White Sr.; A special uncle Frank Eley and lifelong friends Michael Mckee, Willie Taylor, Willie Brooks, Gary Clock, Thomas Chattam, and Edwad Wilson; A host of aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins. people you would ever meet.
